Text Input control

The Text Input Control allows the user to enter or edit any text data as an input in a Text column. Text Input Control is used to accept a single line of text data. For example, use a Text Input Control to accept the name or city or designation of an employee.

Properties

  • Label : Label is the text that is displayed above the text box and helps the user to understand what they are supposed to input in the text box.

  • Properties : These properties help you customize the Label by changing the text size, weight ( Light, Normal, Bold, Extra Bold, X Extra Bold), alignment (Left, Center, Right, Justified) and color of the label.

  • Type : The Type field is automatically generated depending upon the type of control used. In this case, it is a “text” type.

  • Unique Name : A Unique Name is used to uniquely identify a control in your App. Every control that is added on the screen gets an auto-generated Unique Name based on the Label name given to the control.

  • Tooltip: This allows you to add the Tooltip text that would provide a hint to the user for providing input. The Tooltip icon would be visible if you switch on the Show tooltip icon toggle property available below.

  • Description: This Is the description that you can add for your controls. The Description would only be visible if you switch on the Show Description toggle property available below.

  • External CSS: With this property, one can imply exclusive CSS on controls. You can customize your control with CSS by selecting the correct class or id of the control. You can read more here.

  • Submit Data: This field lets you determine whether to send the value of the control or not in Workflow, based on various control states. There are three conditions that could be set for this field.

    1. Always: When this condition is selected, the data in the text field will be submitted irrespective of the state of the text field.
    2. Never: When this condition is selected, the data in the text field will never be submitted irrespective of the state of the text field.
    3. No When Hidden : When this condition is selected, the data in the text field will be submitted if the text field is visible and not submitted when the text field is hidden.
  • Required: When you select the required option, the field becomes a mandatory field and the user can not submit without filling it.

  • Read-Only : When you select this option, the user will no longer be able to edit this field.

  • Hidden: The hidden option helps you to hide the field from the user. This might help to perform some computation you don’t want the user to see or if you want to show certain fields only when a specific condition is met/not met.

  • Caching: When the caching option is selected and if a LOOKUP formula is applied to this control, the value that the LOOKUP returns will be cached and the user will be able to see this value in the text field even when he accesses the microapp later with no connectivity. This option is required when you want your app to be accessible in offline mode as well and getting the latest data from the sheets always is not critical.

  • Hide Label: This option hides the label of the text field from the view.

  • Trigger dependents: When you Disable Trigger Dependents, it helps you to reduce or optimize the unnecessary evaluation of the dependent control’s formula. For a detailed explanation refer to this article here .
    By default, Trigger dependents is enabled. However, in complex apps by switching it off, you would limit the evaluation in the dependent control and in turn ensure quicker response times.

  • Hide on desktop: This option hides the selected control in the desktop view.

  • Hide on Mobile : This option hides the selected control in the mobile view.

  • Dynamic Height : This option dynamically increases /decreases the height of the text control based on the given content.

  • Maintain space when hidden : This option maintains the specified space between controls when a particular control is hidden. When a control is hidden the space is maintained in the preceeding control depending on the space the previous control has occupied.

Note: Dynamic height, Hide on Mobile, Hide on Desktop properties are used in Freeflow Editor only.

  • Theme : The theme option lets you choose the color of the text box. You can either enter a custom hex code value or use one from the available themes in the builder.

  • Placeholder : It is a prompt to give a hint to the user as to what has to be done. It is present in the text field and is overridden when the user inputs something into it.

  • Input Type : The input type defines the type of data that the text field will accept. There a four input types for a Text Input Control:

    1. Text : This type is used to accept text data. Any data that you input is treated as text.

    2. Email : This is a special type of input that accepts Emails in a valid email format. It has an in-built validation to check the email format. If the email is not in a valid email format, then the app will throw an error message " Invalid Email ID ".

    3. URL (Link) : This type is used to store links or URIs from the screen.

    4. Password : Used to accept input for password fields. The text that you enter appears encrypted.

  • Min Character: The character limit lets you set the minimum number of characters that are allowed to be entered in the text field.

  • Max Character : The character limit lets you set the maximum number of characters that are allowed to be entered in the text field.

  • Debounce Time (In ms): This is the delay in milliseconds between events. You can add the debounce time to control the frequency when the action triggers on change in value.

  • Show Raw Data: This allows you to show JSON data directly in a textbox. The data would not be formatted like in the case of arrays where it would be shown as an array and not as a comma-separated string. By default, the Show Raw Data is set as ON.

  • Show Barcode Scanner: When this option is selected, it creates an option to scan a barcode to enter data to the text field when a mobile device with a camera is used to access the microapp. A QR code scanner opens up and when code is scanned, interpreted data is set as control value

Whenever you change the value in the text input control the subsequent actions would be triggered. The action flow would be the same with the same set of on-screen and server-side actions that you have been using for the action button, list controls, and others. The frequency/speed of change can be controlled using debounce property for the control.

focus_out

This is the event when your focus moves to another control then this action flow would be triggered.

enter_press

This event signifies the press of the Enter key when you input data to your Text input control.

How to Use Text Input Control?

Start with selecting the Text Input Control from the Featured section of the Controls Menu.

The text box then appears on the screen in the builder, you can then set all the above-mentioned properties as per your requirements.

There are different ways in which you can bind data to the text field.

  1. Static Data: This is the data that does not change over a period of time. Such data is used to assign default values in fields in your application. The static data can be based on the data type i.e. Numeric, Text, and List type data.

  2. Sheets: This allows you to fetch data from a sheet and display it in the fields. Select your sheet from the list and then select the columns to be used. You can also add filters and sort data.

  3. Controls: This allows you to get data from one of the App controls.

  4. Variables: This assigns the value of the variables defined in the app.

  5. LoggedIn User: You can display the properties related to the LoggedIn User like username, usermail, Admin, status and so on. You can select a single property only . Select column and click Save .

  6. API: This allows you to add an API and select the values returned by the respective API. You can select multiple keys to display values in the detail view.

  7. Custom Formula : This can be used to apply formulas and store the output of those formulas in the detail view rows. You can learn more about formulas here.
